Short answer. On the common scale, 93-100% is an A, 90-92% is an A-, 87-89% is a B+, 83-86% is a B and 80-82% is a B-. Divide points earned by points possible, then multiply by 100.
If you have a score, not a percent
Divide the points you earned by the points possible, then multiply by 100. A score of 45 out of 50 is 45 ÷ 50 = 0.90, so 90%.
The common scale
Most US schools use bands like these: A is 93–100, A- is 90–92, B+ is 87–89, B is 83–86, B- is 80–82, C+ is 77–79, C is 73–76, C- is 70–72, D+ is 67–69, D is 63–66 and D- is 60–62. Below 60 is an F. Your school may draw the lines in a different place, so check your syllabus.
Worked example
Example. A quiz score of 42 out of 48. 42 ÷ 48 = 0.875, so 87.5%. That is a B+ (87–89%).
