Short answer. Needed final score = (target grade - current grade x (1 - final weight)) / final weight. For example, with 85% now, a final worth 30% and a goal of 90%, you need about 102%, which is out of reach for most courses.
The formula
Your grade now covers the part of the course that is done. The final covers the rest. So the grade you want is:
wanted = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the weight of the final as a decimal.
Solve for the final score: final = (wanted − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. The table under the answer shows what you need to finish with 90%, 80% or 70%.
Worked example
Example. You have 84% now. The final is worth 25%. You want 85%.
Final = (85 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (85 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 88%.
Questions
What if the answer is more than 100%?
Then the grade you want is out of reach with the final alone. Ask your teacher about extra credit, or choose a lower target.
Does it work for a midterm or a big project?
Yes. Enter the weight of that one piece instead of the final.
My course has several parts. What do I enter as my grade now?
Use the grade your teacher shows for the work done so far. If you only have scores and weights, use the weighted grade calculator to find it first.
