5-letter word finder

Enter what you know. The list shrinks to the five-letter words that still fit.

Short answer. Enter the green letters in place, the yellow letters you know are in the word, and the grey letters to leave out. The list shows every five-letter word that still fits.

A simple way to narrow it down

Start with the letters you are sure of in the right spot. Type them in the first box, with ? for the other spots.

Next, add the letters you know are in the word but not where. Put them in the second box. Last, add the letters you have ruled out in the third box.

Each new clue cuts the list. When only a few words remain, pick the one that uses the most letters you have not tried yet.

The words come from the ENABLE list, a public-domain word list used in many word games. Other dictionaries differ a little, so a game may accept or reject a few words that this list does not.

Worked example

Example. The pattern c?a?? gives 83 five-letter words, such as chain, chair, chalk, champ and chant. Add a letter to leave out, and the list gets shorter.

Questions

Does this show the answer to a daily puzzle?

No. It only lists words that fit the clues you give. You still choose the guess.

Why does a word I know not appear?

The list may not have it. Games use different dictionaries, and very new words are often missing.

Can I search without any known letters?

Yes. Use only the box for letters it must have, or for letters it cannot have, and the tool lists five-letter words that match.
